Is a College Education Needed?

A popular question is "do I need a college education to get a digital photography job?" Some people may want a part time job that doesn't require a full education and others may be looking for a long term career that may or may not require a college degree. Everybody knows that a college degree is a nice thing to have but does it really get in the way of all the money making? It will really depend on your involvement with other professionals, companies, and equipment. Regardless, if you want a digital photography career and want or don't want to go to college there is a job for you.



Photography Jobs without a College Education



Stock Photography - If you are familiar with freelance photography jobs you should have heard of this method of selling your photos. Basically all you need is to sign up with these companies and educate yourself/learn how to start earning a good amount of profits. Go to the Stock Photography Check List.

Freelance Magazine - You need to contact magazines and offer them your work, if they like it they will pay you for it, if they don't they will send you packing. Either way you don't need to set foot in their office so they won't even ask for your credentials.

Freelance Web and Graphic Design - This can be done by any savvy teenager who knows their way around photoshop and a digital camera. The hard part is trying to get your name and your portfolio out in the open on the internet. Social networking and proper web design is usually needed to make a name for yourself.

Local Photography - You don't have to have a business license to take pictures at sporting events, local events, weddings, and so on. You can earn some easy money from fixing up and presenting these pictures to potential buyers.

Private Business - You can get hired by a private business, but most private business won't need you full time so it might just be temporary work.

Using SLRs and Other equipment - Some places won't even look at your resume unless you have some training with professional equipment.

Photography Agency - Getting hired by an agency can be a very hard task that, in most cases, requires extensive schooling and other skills.

Modeling Photography - In order to get people to take pictures of, you need to have some credentials that your a good photographer. Which might include a college education.

Working for a Company - If you want to get hired as a full time photographer by a company or corporation they want for you to know your stuff. Big companies are usually just looking for easy solutions, so by putting "degree required" they weed out any people that might potentially not know the photography craft.

Advertising - Advertising is a huge job and they only accept people with a degree. You also might need education in the field of advertising.
