Let me just start off saying that Photoshop is a very important program that everyone should, sooner or later, buy Adobe's version. With that being said, not everyone can afford this tool, and on top of that most people won't use all the tools in photoshop (if you're a beginner). That is why we have compiled a list of the best alternative programs that a freelance digital photographer might use. These tools might not have all the fancy bells and whistle photoshop has, but the bright side is most of these programs are easier to use and have less of a learning curve.
Adobe Elements

Adobe Elements is lite version of Photoshop, it has a more basic interface (that can still be consider a bit confusing), and has simpler tools. The program is extremely well made and is the best alternative to the real deal. The downside is it still cost 90.00 big ones, it sure beats $500.00 though.
THE GIMP!!
Still want some processing power without spending a buck, call the GIMP. The GIMP stands for... you probably don't care, but anyway, this FREE program has a good amount of options that are comparable to Adobe photoshop. If you are familiar with Photoshop you will see some of the same tools and ideas in the program. The problem with this program is: it has a down-right horrible interface, and it can be very difficult to use. That's just the opinions here at the office, so you can be the judge... did I mention it was free?

NO! Nothing But Paint!
Don't worry were not talking about the Paint program that is on most Microsoft computers, its a different program called Paint.net. It's simple and offers some good tools that you can use as a freelance digital photographer, but I would not recommend it to a digital editor or graphic designer. You can run your digital photos through this program to change a few thins or buff up a pictures presentation but you wont find any spectacular image editing. The interface is very ugly in this program but, like I said its simple to use so it might not bother you. You can find this program on
Downloads.Com its free. But I also need to mention that it doesn't work on Macs, sorry mac users.
Foto Flexer
This online program (or a web based program) is free and easy to use, but obviously lacks a lot of depth that freelance digital photographers need. I do recommend this if you need a quick fix without running a giant program (or) for fixing photos from a different computer, but it wont work as a full time photo editor. The tools are basic and easy to use, but still won't give you everything you need. Try it out at
FotoFlexer.com.
Other Web Based Programs worth mentioning
There are a lot of web based programs for digital editing out there and they all have their pros and cons, while some aren't even worth your time. Here is a list of some programs worth mentioning.
