Graphic Design

Graphic Design is a form of art using computer programs to manipulate and draw images. It doesn't take computer programming it takes a creative mind and a sense of control with your software. Creative Director

This person is top dog in the industry of graphic design, this person leads a creative team in advertisements, websites, commercials or whatever type of media. Obviously this takes the skills of directing, people skills and leadership. For any piece of media to make it to the public it first has to go through the Art/creative director. That person decides the final layout of the project, talks to and interprets the ideas of the client and makes sure the finished project gets out on time. Of course being the leader of the pack has the benefits of getting paid more and a salary can be from 40,000 to 80,000 a year.

Becoming a creative director takes going to school for Graphic Design and Advertising, and maybe more depending on who you want to work for. You also need to know your way around quite a few types of programs like: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, QuarkXpress, Shockwave, Adobe Indesign, Flash, Adobe Pagemaker, not every program is needed because a lot of programs do the same thing. Schooling is necessary for a person to get hired by a professional firm, like a newspaper, magazine, advertising agency, and product design. But a lot of people decide the freelance or independent road by starting their own company or working as your own director.


Layout Designer

This may seem like a simple job on the surface but it takes a lot of thought and psychology of advertising. Basically what a Layout designer/artist does is create how the pictures and words lay on the medium. They choose the type face that best fits the ad, picture, cover, magazine and so on, that draws a person attention and lets them easily keep reading. Making color schemes, text positions, and an overall feel of the project is really based on the Layout design. A layout designer can make about 20,000 to 50,000 dollars a year, and is usually only needed by bigger businesses.


Logo and Product Label Design

A logo or symbol can represent a company in a good or bad light, so it is crucial to know what you are doing when creating a logo. It will be the conditioned image people think when they mention a product or service. Based on a logo's design you can tell what kind of company it will be: a modern company, a wholesome company, a corporation, a unique or stylistic company just to name a few. If you want to become a logo artist then you need to be proficient in drawing and using programs like Corel Draw, and have schooling in graphic design, and computer arts.



Another job that is relative to logo design is product labeling, such as the design on a can of pop or a box of cookies. This also takes drawing because most products aren't photo manipulations, but a few colors and a stylistic font. The salary of a logo/product designer is pretty wide spread because they can have teams of logo designers, but usually around 20,000 60,000.
