The general use of Superimposing is needed in almost every aspect of picture editing and is especially used for modeling, portraits and of course advertisement. But like I said it can have uses for almost any sect of photography and editing that you can think of, being able to edit in any object to simplify the means of taking a difficult photo. Everything from fixing photo imperfections to adding whole foreign objects into the photograph, can be done with the simple tools of photoshop. Although the tools are pretty easy to use they are very hard to master, of course someone can cut a object out of a picture and impose it onto another. But the idea of realism makes this task much harder and yet more rewarding.

Whatever the project or subject field, reading this tutorial is extremely important and vital for a photoshop career.

What is Superimposing?

Well it is a simple question but it is asked quite frequently, superimposing is the act of laying a graphic over another graphic to fit its original source. So by cutting one picture out and putting it in another using blending and other tools is what this consist of. Other things are referred to as superimposing like airbrushing and fixing a persons blemishes, because its the act of changing something for it to appear to be as it were really in the picture.

Selecting an Image

First we will need to talk about how to cut an image out of the original picture, there are several ways to do this so I will try to teach as many as I can. If you have a controlled apparatus and are able to take the image yourself then this will help out a lot. If you have ever heard of the term Green-screen or Blue-screen it is pretty much the same concept. You need to find a bright color to set behind the object or subject in order to make cutting out the object easy. I recommend using a green piece of paper if you are superimposing something like a piece of jewelry, a small ball or what have ya. But if you are using something big like a car or a person then you need to get creative with a blanket or a solid color wall. Either way make sure that plenty of light covers the object and the background evenly or it will make it difficult.

After you have taken a picture of the object you need to superimpose into another picture, then you will need to use the SELECT - COLOR RANGE (if you have not read the Dynamics Page this would be a good time to read the Color Select and Replacement section). After selecting the background color then simply delete the background and you will be left with your object.

If you don't have any control over the picture such as the instance where you don't get to take it, then you have to use other methods of deleting the background or selecting an object.

SELECTING AN OBJECT FROM AN UNUSUAL BACKGROUND
  • Simply Use the Crop Tool located on the left with all the other tools. Drag a box around the selected picture and then click the check mark at the top right.

You can give yourself more workspace if you do it the following way.

  • Draw a box around the object with the RECTANGLE MARQUEE tool, it doesn't have to be perfect just so the whole object is encompassed in the box

I got that Dinosaur for 99 cents
I have not thought of a name for him yet???
After that either:
  • CTRL + C (copy), FILE - NEW DOCUMENT then hit okay and CTRL + V (paste) which will give you a small workspace and get all that other not needed stuff out of the way
(OR)
  • another method is after using the MARQUEE tool you can go to SELECT - INVERSE and then hit DELETE this will leave your work space the same size and still get rid of that extra stuff
  • Now select the MAGIC WAND tool and change the tolerance to between about 10 and 20 and start clicking on excess colors and objects around the subject and hit delete, this step is very tedious but is the most dynamic way to delete the background, if you are cutting into your superimposed subject then lower the tolerance if you aren't selecting enough then raise the tolerance

start hovering above that delete button
Mainly just get the parts that are pretty much the same

  • After getting most or some of the extra deleted use the LASSO tool to delete any extra details, the trick is zooming in a ton to be more precise with your deletion, work on small parts at a time and only delete bits and pieces at a time this will help you CTRL + Z (or) Undo any mistakes, also use the STRAIGHT LINE LASSO and the MAGNETIC LASSO tool to get closer to any edges you have missed

Zooming in and using the lasso tools
Get any of the extra detailed background objects with the Lasso Tools

  • Repeat this process until all excess image is removed
SHE DOES EXIST!
The Realism is Scary!

I finished this off by dragging this dino into a picture of (I think) some where in Scotland.

Fixing Blemishes... everybody has them

This is fun, easy, and doens't take that much skill, and what this entails is to cover up zits and blemishes using photoshop tools to make a portrait or modeling picture more presentable. This also also applies to fixing bags under peoples eyes, covering up unsightly moles, and whatever embarrassing things you can think of.

Take a look at this beauty

So now that we have our subject, we need to know how to fix it which is a relatively easy process. First select the clone stamp tool from your tool bar, then select the brush size (little bigger than the blemish). What the clone stamp does is takes a brush size snap shot of a particular point in the picture (of your choice), then lets you draw with that particular snap shot. So hold ALT and then click on a section of skin not altered by the blemish, and let go of ALT now change the opacity of the brush to under 50% and click on the blemish until the redness goes away. Be careful too much and it will look obvious and not enough will still let the blemish show through.

After selecting a section of skin with the ALT held down, click on the pimple section a few times and the pimple will disappear

And you're done, no more zit. Remember this also works with dark circles under peoples eyes, moles, and other blemishes.
