Freelance Line and Plane photography mostly consist of architecture photography, and is the freelance photography solely based to geometric shapes, lines and forms. Where taking a picture simply represents its basic form of shapes and figures, and not so much the meaning of the object itself. That is just one way of looking at it though, and obviously not the only way, because this type of freelance photography is used all the time in urban settings with artistic purposes. Another use of freelance line and plane photography is macro pattern photography which is a close up perception of shapes mostly carrying the state of homogeneity. Great for websites and logo design, so freelance jobs are easily found on the subject although it may not seem so because of the general meaning of the photography.

So Many Shapes to Choose From

What qualifies as this type of digital photograph, simply anything that exists as a geometric shape. Buildings are the best example, because they were built with intention of being a geometric figure. A lot of architecture has made great photos, and it's not very hard to find. Take your digital camera out on the streets of the city and there are tons of things to take pictures of such as: Street corners where buildings intersect, parked cars, staircases, street lamp rows pretty much anything that shows a nice pattern or represents a set of exact shapes.
The Line in "lines and planes"
So these pictures are very fun to take and very fun to look for, to qualify as a line you are looking for anything with a distinct horizon line or anything that shows distinct line usage. That is a very poor explanation, but you will get it.

To capture a great horizon line you need to steady the camera perfectly center to a flat ground so the bottom horizontal line is at a 0 degrees, match the bottom of the viewer (inside your camera) with the horizontal line that you're capturing. Objects could act as lines standing out in a plane background such as very linear trees (dead trees), lamp posts, or a set of fence posts. Some examples of a more pattern based line photo would be pictures of window shades, sidewalk lines, parking lot spaces, wallpaper pattern, or a brick wall, all these objects are supposed to show lines.

First try getting a straight horizon line, then try to move the horizon line at different angles like 45 degrees. This will make the lines that interact with the horizon line change there angle, concept and artistic reference.
Macro Pattern Digital Photography
This is truly one of the funnest things to do in our digital photography tutorials, at least in my opinion, taking close up shots of figures that exist in a pattern are most intriguing . This could be anything from a carpet pattern, stained glass or the bricks laid in a building, anything that carries a general repetition. Patterns are great for logo design just by bringing it into photoshop and putting a couple of filters on it. When taking pictures of patterns there a couple of things you need to remember about freelance macro digital photography, such as it needs to be well lit so natural light will work well but you can put the flash on. Although I don't recommend using flash if the picture isn't going to be changed later in photoshop. If you have any other questions about lighting look at the
Freelance Macro Digital Photography section on this website.

A huge factor is balancing color and angle, if the pattern is crooked this could defeat the whole purpose. Here is my suggestion; line up the bottom of the frame with the bottom of the pattern, so each part equally touches the bottom of the frame. You can also change the resolution so there is a box inside of the viewer making it easy to get a straight on shot. Balancing color means that if the whole pattern isn't shaded the same then it will appear not be as linear, try to evenly coat the pattern with light to prevent false shadowing. And don't hold your digital camera at an angle so that the camera senses an uneven amount of light.

Of course we were referring to patterns with the character of being 2 dimensional, but if you want to give your patterns some depth try holding the camera at an angle and don't forget to use your macro settings on your camera.
Macro Texture Digital Photography

Freelance Macro Texture Digital Photography is pretty much the same as pattern photography in concept but the subject is different. Textures are any chaotic gathering of shapes, figures and lines, and perhaps a little bit easier to take than patterns because there is no real point of reference, due to the fact that there is no pattern. Along with patterns textures work great for logos and web graphics, aren't relatively hard to take. Some examples of chaotic formations of shapes, lines and figures mostly carrying the state (but not always) of hetergenity are.. gravel in a drive way, plaster on a wall, leaf textures, or wood grain.
Line and Planes - Macro Texture and Macro Pattern Hybrids

Okay this is kinda complicated and has a very defined meaning in photography, but these photos are great for artistic value. Mixing Textures and patterns to make Texture Pattern Hybrids, and let me explain something that you might already know although something may contain a pattern if broken down (or zoomed in) far enough there is a chaotic texture (zoomed even further we would have atoms but were not going to talk about that). So this entails finding a pattern and shooting it at an angle where one focal point is on either the texture or the pattern and it slowly fades out of focus in a direction this is known as perspective points and can be read about in the macro section. Or the simple version is taking a straight on picture close enough to see the texture far enough to see the pattern.
(It is hard to see by my example but in a bigger resolution you can see the texture along with the brick pattern).
Lets take a carpet design: you shoot it at an angle so you can see all the carpet fibers and yet still see a pattern (or) simply you can shoot it over head close enough to see the texture far away enough to see the pattern.
The theory in taking these digital picture is the same: you need tons of light and need to hold the camera steady, that is the great part about macro photography of patterns and textures, most textures and patterns don't move (unless you're chasing after a bus with your camera) so you can take as many shots as you want.
Angles

In order to choose an angle you need to know what you are going to use it for. If you're going to take the photo right to photoshop then you might just use a 2 dimensional shot of of standing parallel with the subject(s) making sure that the the light is covering the subject evenly. If you're going for a artistic look or you're trying to make it appealing to someone such as a real estate brochure then you have to think a little more creatively.

Taking pictures from odd angles really works out for something like this such as if you were taking a picture of a room with no furniture in it try taking it from one of the corners or nearly pressed up against the wall to give the room a good feel of depth.

Try taking a symmetric picture right down the middle of a street (watch out for cars) with buildings on both sides of you. I have to say you aren't very limited when taking lines and planes photographs, tons of angles work, but remember with lines or perfect shapes then nothing beats a perfect horizon line and a straight on shot.
Some Creative Tips
A good way to show contrast and minimize color distraction is to turn the color mode to black and white, it will give it a great artistic look and if you swap it to photoshop it will be ready for contrast editing. You can also try taking reflective pictures from a building window or street puddle, it gives a really creative look to a somewhat simple concept. A way to add life to your photos is to involve people in them it can still be a line and plane based photo, just with people. Setup simple house hold items into different arrangements showing shape and size ratios to get a abstract photography look.
