Selling Graphics, Vectors, and Logos

If you are a graphic designer or just good with photoshop then you can capitalize on selling logos, vectors, and graphics on stock photography sites. Stock sites aren't just for digital photos, and although, a majority of the people buying stock photography are graphic designers, another percentage are just people looking for premade layouts, designs and logos.





What Are Graphics, Logos, and Vectors

Example of a Vector Graphic DesignYou probably all know what each of these words mean, but I will explain them anyway and give you reasons why people want to buy graphics. Graphics can be described as anything made on a computer through the use of several different kinds of programs (the most popular being photoshop). Graphics can consist of pictures reformatted to look different or could be an actually drawn picture. Sometimes graphics are a combination of different kinds of art workings tied into one to make up a product, logo, design, or magazine cover.

Logos are simple designs that formulate a iconic totality that may bring upon a subconscious relationship with a product or company. These depictions usually do not carry a baroque quality so to portray a simpler message. They also usually have words attached to them, and layout design is a big part of the art.

Vectors are a type of graphic that don't carry the same parameters as a digital image or picture. A digital photo has millions of different shaded and colored pixels that when blown up to a higher magnification the pixels also themselves blow up. A vector has the state of consistency and doesn't change under a higher magnification. A vector isn't contingent to an amount of shaded pixels, it is built from mathematical equations such as the equation of the area of a circle. Pretty much what this boils down to is a file type, meaning not a .jpg or .gif, and these graphics are based from shapes and not pictures.

How to sell your Graphics

In beginning we recommend doing exactly what we tell digital photographers to do, I recommend that you learn about everything here, it has helped a lot of people get started. After you know you have the skills from that piece of reading then you can start to build your online portfolio. In order to start earning profits you need to start signing up with stock photography companies and start uploading your work. If people purchase your work they will get some royalties to use the graphic and you earn a small profit. There are other ways to earn money using logos and graphics with a similar method that will be discussed in a later article.

Understanding a Few Things

This is a very hard business, not due to the demand of graphics, but due to the skills needed to produce high selling work. Digital photography is a lot easier because you can learn the skills of photography as you go along but making vectors can be a very difficult process without structured schooling or college. It may also require some high priced programs like the Corel Series, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and some high priced hardware like a draw pad. Adding and manipulating a digital photo is one thing but creating a whole vector art piece or logo is another. This isn't meant to discourage anybody, it should just be said that it can be a long hard road. On the other hand if you do have your hands on some good software and hardware and have the skills then you can make a lot of money.

Developing a Niche

If you are going to sell your graphics on a stock photo site you have to choose a niche that you want to saturate inside the market. Vines, leaves, cities, circles, are all over the place and competing with people already dug in that market can be very hard. Instead, try thinking of new types of graphics that that are in high demand yet in low supply. Searching magazines and advertisements is a good way of doing this. Also try going to site like ShutterStock and search for vectors. You can do a lot of research using stock sites to see what topics are already thoroughly covered.
